Happy Birthday, Plan B!
One year ago today, our engineers released the very first application from Lookout Labs, an innovative app called Plan B that gives people the opportunity to find their Android phone after they lose it. Here we are, twelve months later, and Plan B has helped hundreds of thousands of people locate missing phones that would have otherwise been lost forever.![]()
From recovering stolen devices with the help of local police, to locating phones in dumpsters, open fields, taxi cabs and in the cracks between car seats, we’ve heard many great stories about how Plan B reunited people with their most valuable device. In honor of Plan B’s one-year anniversary, we wanted to share a few of our favorite “Plan B to the rescue” testimonials:
Best app ever! (Jenny, October 4, 2011)
“Accidentally left my phone on top of my car while getting ready to leave and drove off. I scoured the street and couldn’t find it until I found this app mentioned on a blog. I installed it remotely and it pinpointed my phone to my neighbor’s house, who had picked it up off the street. I thought my phone was gone for good!! Thank you so much for developing this app!”
Found my phone in a dumpster! (Adrienne, August 28, 2011)
“Thanks to this app, I found my phone in a dumpster! My phone had accidentally gotten knocked into a trashcan on our boat during a weekend outing. We tore our boat apart looking for it, in the refrigerator, under the toilet, you name it, we looked. I logged into my Gmail account on my husband’s phone and tracked my phone’s location. This app let me know the phone was yet another 100 yards away from our boat and we found it in the dumpster next to the blown-out flip flop and the coffee grounds! A+!”
Top 5 app (SoCalBoiler, August 18, 2011)
“I installed Plan B two weeks ago and it’s saved my bacon twice already. First time it let me know it was in my house so I was able to find it, then today it told me it was first at my home then later at my office – and the only way that was possible is if it was on me or in my car. A quick inspection of the car seats and floorboards and BINGO! There it was! Absolutely love this app.”
We have received many thank-yous from Plan B users and we’re so happy to have helped so many people find their phones! A big thanks to our fans for all your support; stay tuned for more Lookout Labs innovations to come!
For those of you who haven’t downloaded Plan B before, it’s easy! Check out this simple step-by-step guide.

sure has helped us out twice, found my phone in trash sack in car and the BF’s on side of highway while out of town
Hi,
will the sms “locate” be stealth or will he tip off the person who found the phone ? Because if second, it will remind the thief to turn it off or change the google account quicker… would it be possible to resend it directly from the market (by reclicking install for exemple) so that the request for location stays hidden ?
Thanks for the answer,
Alan
@alanbalan, thanks for your questions. If you text “locate” to your device, and someone is using your phone, they will not see the text appear. From the Google Play Store, it is possible to only install Plan B once to your phone, but you can continue to text “locate” to your device to receive emails with updates about your phone’s location to your Gmail account. If you have any other questions, please feel free to email us at: feedback@mylookout[dot]com. Thanks!
Hi,
just so that you know, on galaxy note, the sms locate appears in plain sight when received…. Not very descreet…
Alan.
My phone was stolen and was switched off. I have followed the installation instructions of plan B. As the phone is switched off Could PLanb be able to locate the phone. What happens if the person who stole the phone changes the sim card and switch it on?
@maqbool, thanks for your message – we’re sorry to hear your phone was stolen. If you install Plan B to your Android device and the phone is turned off, Plan B will be unable to locate the phone at that time. However, as soon as your phone is turned on and receives a connection (WiFi or network), Plan B should send you an email with the phone’s location (even if the SIM card has been changed). If the SIM card has not been changed, you can also text “locate” to your device to receive multiple location emails. If you have any questions, please let us know: support@mylookout[dot]com. Thank you!
