Favorite Lookout feature: Find My Phone
What do you use your phone for?
“Primarily business—I’m on my phone 12 hours a day.” John uses his smartphone for all facets of work correspondence: email, phone, SMS.
How John found Lookout
When John was shopping for his smartphone, a Best Buy mobile phone sales associate recommended he download Lookout Mobile Security. The Best Buy representative explained that Lookout scanned apps for malware, backed up contacts and information, and if the phone is lost, the user could track it down using Lookout.
What John loves about Lookout
John is a big fan of Lookout’s “find-my-phone” feature. “I continually tell my story to other smartphone users—this app is great!”
How Lookout saved the day
John is a businessman who travels frequently for work. While attending a conference in Germany, John returned to his hotel room one evening, only to realize he had lost his phone. John’s smartphone is essential for his everyday business interactions—it holds his contacts, emails and passwords. John couldn’t believe he’d lost his Blackberry; he immediately called the office where he had just had his meeting. Unfortunately no one had found anything—someone mentioned they had seen him talking on his phone right before he got in a taxi and left the conference.
Suddenly, John remembered he had downloaded Lookout on his phone months before. He logged onto a computer and went to the mylookout.com site. Within minutes, Lookout had produced a map of the phone’s location. John printed out the map and hailed a cab—he was determined to track down his smartphone. The map showed that it was located in a suburban neighborhood outside of the city. When the cab pulled up to the location, there were two houses next to one another on the street—John knew his phone had to be in one of these two homes. John had told his “lost-phone” story to the cab driver on the ride over, and the English/German speaking taxi driver offered to act as a translator and explain his story to the people once they knocked on the door.
John and the cab driver approached the first house and the taxi driver explained in German about John’s lost phone and Lookout’s find-my-phone feature that had led them to this location. The man at the first house said he did not have the phone.
John went to the house next door and knocked. A man opened the door, and again they explained the story. The man told John and the cab driver to wait at the door while he went to check to see if he had the phone. Indeed, the man came back holding John’s Blackberry! As it turned out, the man owned a taxi company and at the end of each shift, the drivers would drop off any lost and found items at his house. The man said a driver had dropped off the phone earlier that day. John was elated: “I don’t know what I would have done if I had lost my phone for good.”
Moral of the Story?
No matter where you are–even thousands of miles from home in a foreign country–Lookout is there to protect your phone!

I’ve got Lookout installed on my two blackberrys. A bold 9000 and a bold 9700. When i try to locate my phone, i receive an sms message with some information, and than Lookout locates my phone.
What will happen, when somebody find/steal my phone and puts his own sim-card in the phone with his own number? Is it still possible to locate my phone? When it isn’t…. it’s a quite useless program, because I think when somebody finds a phone, they always replace or remove the sim-card in a couple of hours.
Jeff
@Jeffrey, thanks for your questions. A device with Lookout installed on it can connect to our servers as long as it has a connection, cellular or Wi-Fi, so it doesn’t even need a SIM chip in it to work with our service. If a thief took out the sim card and put in a new SIM card, Lookout would still be able to locate your device. If you have any other questions/comments, please feel free to contact us at: feedback[at]mylookout.com. Thanks!
