Lookout Premium Unveiled

We know how important it is to protect the mobile experience and today we are announcing a premium version of Lookout’s award-winning free product that includes new security and privacy capabilities for added smartphone protection. Mobile security has become a growing concern for users as evidenced by Lookout’s tremendous growth to more than three million users in less than one year.  And we’ve found that consumers are concerned about privacy on their phone.  They realize that they have a ton of private information on their phone they want to protect, including their identity information, location, personal data and messages. Lookout Premium now offers better control over the personal information that smartphone apps access with the new Privacy Advisor.

On November 16th Lookout Premium will be available to all Android users. For our existing users, nothing changes – unless they want it to! They get to continue using the same great free Lookout product they currently have, free of charge.  In additional to new premium features, a few of our free features will become premium features for new users. If you want to upgrade to Lookout Premium, you’ll have the option to do so on November 16th.

Lookout Premium includes all the same features at Free, plus:

  • Additional Security + Privacy: Privacy Advisor + Remote Wipe and Remote Lock
  • Enhanced Backup & Restore: Photos and call history, in addition to contacts. Transfer data to a new phone.
  • Premium Support: Priority response to your issues and questions

Lookout Free includes:

  • Essential Security: Malware, virus and spyware protection
  • Data protection: Backup and restore contacts
  • Missing device: Locate a missing phone and remote “scream”

Between now and November 16th we’ll be providing you with more information on the great features in Lookout Premium on our blog.  Stay tuned for more details and as always, thanks for being a Lookout user.  Our job is to protect your mobile experience.

You guys and gals are really “onto something”! Keep up the great work!

  2. Billy Yesko says:

So how much is this gonna cost?

  3. Stephen says:

Billy, according to Computer World it is $2.99/month or $29.99/year

  4. Fred says:

I get a message “You are almost at your storage quota”. Will the paid version allow me more storage?

  5. alicia says:

    Hi Fred,
Lookout Premium does not include additional storage at this time. We’ll keep you posted as we add new features to Lookout Premium. Thanks for checking in!

  6. Jeff says:

I’ve been telling anyone who’ll listen to get this app. They can thank me later! Good job people

  7. Michael Jordan says:

I really like the locating feature you have and it works seamlessly with Google maps. Any enhancements with this feature?

  8. Michael Jordan says:

I do have to say that sometime the accuracy of the locator is within 10 feet and a few times it’s been down the street. Any possible refinement to correct this?

  9. Richard M. says:

I have Lookout from when I purchased my Android and I’m not sure how to use all the features. If I lose my phone how do I contact you? I see it Looking Out for me all the time, just not sure what I should do.

    Thanks

Hey Guys, would love to see a strategic partnership with DropBox.. Great product and love Lookout’s service. For anyone who thinks they can “surf the net” on their phone and not be vulnerable to viruses is deadly wrong. Lookout has by far the first mover advantage and is becoming increasingly entrenched in the security of mobile phones. Fraudsters and black hats are anxiously designing programs to attack mobile phones from every angle. Watch out Private Equity… Lookout is on the Rise!

  11. Brian says:

@Richard – If you lose your phone, you should login to http://mylookout.com to run a locate on it. That will show you where the phone is.

@Michael Jordan – Locate can be hard to troubleshoot, especially if you’re using GPS, as we rely on satellite information to get a location and different devices have different GPS capabilities. Line of sight to the sky from your device is very helpful and sometimes running the locate more than once will help to provide you a better result. If you still have issues, please email me at support at mylookout dot com.

  12. ceallachg says:

What if our phone gets lost/stolen/broken or we upgrade to another phone? Do we still get to have and use Lookout for free on the new phone, or do we lose that along with the old one? Since Lookout has our email address, I would think it should be easy to verify that someone had downloaded Lookout before the premium version began.

  13. Brandon says:

As a former iPhone user, Lookout has become a priceless supplement to the Google services that helps blow MobileMe out of the water.

Any chance of call and SMS/MMS blocking and logging being added? That’s the only feature of the Norton Security app that I would like to see added. That function also follows the privacy theme of Lookout Premium features.

  14. Brian says:

@Lee Oliver – partnering with DropBox is an interesting idea. I’ll run it by our product management team.

  15. ceallachg says:

No response to me or Brandon’s questions?

  16. Leo says:

Don’t get me wrong but WaveSecure charges $19.90 a year with exactly same service. What’s the advantage of using lookout over WaveSecure?

  17. Cayce says:

Hello Lookout Crue. I first would like to say that your app rocks. I have used everything your app offers and looking forward to the new look and options. Now I am kind of lost on what you all mean about if you have the lookout app you will still be able to use it for free. Now when you release the new lookout version does this mean that if you want to use the new features it will cost us. I really am happy to have this app but just not sure what your are saying for us users with lookout already.
I also want you all to know that you guys and gals have done a wounderfull job on your app. Keep up the good work and trust me I tell everyone about how great your app is and that they would be silly not to use your app for the new android phone.
Sincerely Cayce, A very greatfull customer.

  18. Brian says:

I would like to see text message backup…

  19. alicia says:

@Brian thanks for the feedback! We’ll be sure to run the idea by the product team.

  20. alicia says:

@Cayce, sorry you are confused! You, as an existing user, get to use the same product that you have now for free, for the life of your account. Some of the features that are currently free will become premium for NEW users, but an existing user like you will see no change. If you want to upgrade to Premium for more comprehensive protection, you can. Now, you don’t have to take any action in order to get the same great free features for the life of your account. You will automatically be placed in a special group that gets the same great free product you know and love for free, even when you update the app. I hope this answers your question! Thanks for being a loyal Lookout user and spreading the word about Lookout. It’s users like you that help make us a success!

  21. alicia says:

Leo, Thanks for reaching out. Unlike other security products, we protect against all mobile threats: viruses, malware & spyware, data loss and lost or stolen phones.

  22. alicia says:

Hi! Thanks for reaching out. Since you are an existing user, you will get to keep the same great free features you have today for the life of your account. As you point out, since your Lookout account is associated with your email, you can upload a new phone to your existing account and have the same Lookout experience as before. I hope this answers your questions! If you need more help you can email Brian at support at mylookout dot com.

  23. alicia says:

@Brandon, thanks for the feedback. It’s definitely something we’ll be sure to run by the product team. We really appreciate that you took the time to give us your feedback. It’s users like you that help us improve our product.

  24. Pat says:

Will there be a multiple phone discount?

  25. Nic says:

The big problem with my phone is that its battery life is terrible and if I were to keep the GPS on, my phone would be dead in 5 hours. Is there a way to integrate remote enable gps so that the accuracy would be down to a few meters instead of of a few hundred or thousand meters that I get using cell towers?

  26. John says:

I use your product now, so if I upgrade to the newer version will it put more of a drain on my battery? Android battery are short on life as you know. Also if I don’t like the upgrade can I go back to the free version?

  27. alicia says:

@John There should be no change in battery use with the Premium version of Lookout. We are offering a FREE 30-day trial, giving you the opportunity to try Lookout Premium before buying it.

  28. ceallachg says:

“since your Lookout account is associated with your email, you can upload a new phone to your existing account and have the same Lookout experience as before”

A company that values loyalty? Very cool. I’m liking Lookout more and more!

  30. David A says:

I recently had a phone stolen and lookout was not able to locate it. can a thief turn off or delete app so I can’t locate them? Is there something not running on the phone that could prevent the app from doing its function?

  31. Brian says:

@Nic – We can’t currently remotely turn on your GPS but that is coming in a future release. As of now, we only use GPS when a locate is requested by you.

  32. Sindi says:

I am interested in more information regarding the “wipe/Nuke” feature…my phone was recently stolen so looking for options. What is the process activate the wipe feature in the event the phone is stolen? Another service requires that the phone be “rooted”. (not even sure what the means…but sounds like a risk that i am not willing to take). thank you.

  33. Brian says:

@sindi – To nuke your phone, if you are in our premium trial or have premium itself, you can go to https://www.mylookout.com/missing_device and select ‘wipe’ from there. Your phone does not need to be rooted to work with Lookout. If you have more product questions, please email support at mylookout dot com.

  34. Angie says:

Does the GPS tracking work on the phone tracking if the phone is stolen and the battery died? Or if they take the 4G battery out of it then can it be tracked? My phone was stolen last night and it immediately was turned off and my MyLookOut has tried to locate the phone and it says it is not picking up a signal.

  35. Brian says:

@Angie – Sorry to hear of you phone being stolen.

Unfortunately no software can track a phone that doesn’t have power, including Lookout. If the phone is powered on though (even with a new SIM installed) and a network connection is available, Lookout will reconnect (within 12-24 hrs) to our servers and complete the locate – sending an email to you with the results.

  36. Aaron says:

Is there a way to add my wifes phone to my account and my phone to her account at the same time ?

  37. Brian Noble says:

@Aaron – It is not possible to have one phone on two accounts simultaneously. When you log into Lookout on the phone with your address, that is the account that is active on the phone. You can uninstall and re-install and log in with your wife’s account but then her account will be active on the device.

  38. Ricardo says:

I would that my account would remain in renewed automatically, you can
