Ask Flexilis Live!
July 30Today we held an event on Twitter called “Ask Flexilis!” where we took any and all questions people on Twitter had on anything mobile, whether it was about the Carriers, Handset makers, new technologies, security, new about mobile and current events in mobile, or even questions about Flexilis.
Posted below is the transcript from the event, Enjoy!
Q: @heisenthought: ”What kind of mobile attacks do you guys worry about the most?“
A: @flexilis: “Any attack really. “If it threatens your data, your livelyhood, or your mobile experience we want to be there to stop it. The current iPhone vulnerability is one of the big ones right now, hopefully apple provides a fix soon”
Q: @jgrubbs: “will you be adding the ability to edit my contacts via the web that are then re-synced back to my phone?”
A: @flexilis: “It’s something we’re looking in to, our focus so far has been more backup than sync, & we’re making sure we’re doing that right first.”
Q: @tlrobinson: “How do you go about finding vulnerabilities in phones?”
A: @flexilis: “our security researchers are some of the best. they sift through the code, test it all in a million ways and more, they rock!”
Q: @cloud79: “I want to know more about the people behind Flexilis and why there are passionate what they are doing. Transparent information.”
A: @flexilis: “Our founders are USC Grads who were ahead of the game, realizing the future would be mobile, and it needs protection too.”
Q: @dblackshell: “I use a Vodafon 225 mobile phone. I like it because it IS a phone; I gave up a long time ago on smartphones…”
A: @flexilis: “Some only need just a phone, others use it as a phone & way to enhance productivity & have fun. we’re here to help either way!”
Q: @brucekgreen: “how vulnerable are winmo devices thru bluetooth intrusion?”
A: @flexilis “there are some HTC devices severely vulnerable to a bluetooth bug, HTC has provided a fix here: http://bit.ly/F7j5X , There are other ways to attack via bluetooth as well, we recommend not leaving the phone in ‘discoverable’ mode, which will help.”
@brucekgreen: “thanks! I generally dont leave bluetooth on due to security concerns, but also battery conservation. “
@flexilis: “yep, of course saving battery is another concern for many and their devices too! “
Q: @heisenthought: “I have Android G1. Most favorite: Building on an open platform. Least favorite: Lacks usability and a fast and snappy UI”
A: @flexilis: “keep an eye out for future android devices, they are making great progress in that area, especially HTC with their new Sense UI for android!”
(note: this response originally didn’t post to twitter due to an unknown twitter error.)
Q: @euroconsult: “will there be an iPhone client (of Flexilis), and do you know approximately when (this year, next year, …)?”
A: @flexilis “There’s an iPhone client
It’ll start getting into hands VERY soon, just cant say when. Im using it currently and love it!”
Q: @firsttiger: “Any plans to develop Flexilis Security for the Android?”
A: @flexilis “Android has also been being worked on in the Flexilis labs currently, and could *possibly* see a beta release date around or slightly after the iPhone.”
(Note: this answer also was supposed to have submitted to twitter, but didn’t post for unknown reasons.)
@firsttiger ”I’d love to be in on the beta. Your WinMo product is a core install for me and I install my phones often.”
Q: @i3oilermaker: “What are your impressions of the #PalmPre as a competitor in the mobile device market as well as from a security perspective?”
A: @flexilis “It seems to be a nifty device, and it’s fun to play with. But Palm has a long ways to go when it comes up to catching up and surpassing Apple’s appstore and other features.”
(this also didn’t post it seems)
(followup: here’s an interesting article on Palm Pre security, posted last month: http://www.cio.com/article/495129/Hackers_Dissect_Palm_Pre_WebOS )
Q: @firsttiger: “Do you think WinMo will catch up with the iPhone in the next 2 years in terms of # of users?”
A: @flexilis “WinMo is still big worldwide, It can even better here if they fix UI usability on touchscreen devices soon enough”
Q: @brucekgreen: “a friend of mine wants to know if there is a way to make a gen2 iphone send pic messages.”
A: @flexilis “If hes referring to iPhone 3G, as long as it’s got the 3.0 software, he should be able to picture message when his provider supports it”
Q: @firecracker37: “what feature do you see on the horizon that will forever change the industry as much as the camera phone did”
A: @flexilis: “I believe the newer devices using accelerometers, compasses, and more will and are greatly changing how we use mobile devices”
@flexilis: “Thanks to everyone who participated!”

So, I see discussion about the current SMS vulnerability, and it turns out a very similar(but worse in many ways) affects Windows Mobile, does Flexilis address and stop these SMS attacks?(Stop remote control of winmo via sms exploit?)
Flexilis 04 Aug 09
Tim: we dont have protection for this in the latest release, but should have a tool for this very soon!

fixed the locate my phone issue yet ?

I am trialing flexilis at the moment and i find it a surprise that it does not have a black or white list for websites or web apps. it blocks all my applications that requires web access and reputable websites too. i’ve had to turn it off and just use the anti virus.
can this be looked at. other than this its a reasonably good little security application. would also suggest sms blocking. don’t know if anyone else noticed but the phone locater does not work. have been running it for two days now without luck.
Chris 19 Aug 09
It’s been fixed, though we havent released the latest update that incorporates it, but that should happen very soon!
Chris 19 Aug 09
prince: it shouldnt block particular websites, if that’s the case be sure to email us at support.at.flexilis.dot.com , and we can take a look and help you out. Thanks for the feedback!
Ebony Prince 20 Aug 09
chris what is fixed exactly. the phone locator or the black and white list? not too concerned about the locator. nice feature but not an imperative. think Flexilis could be greatly improved with a little bit more flexibility. starting with a prompt that asks the user what to add to black or white list? however, thanks for the info.
Ebony Prince 20 Aug 09
chris just saw your other comment. it blocks all websites. e.g. Cnn, http://www.bbc.co.uk, web based applications like msn messenger, skype, spb weather, and many more. just blocks stuff. a bit frustrating but i’m sure you guys will sort it. i think if a user can configure the firewall through a black or white list it should get around this. in addition may be useful when first installed if no virus is found on phone to accept already installed apps or web favourites as legit and grant access until the user configure it differently.
Flexilis 25 Aug 09
We’re currently working on that, its not an issue that affects everyone, but an extremely small amount of devices, possibly due to certain browsers or something else on the device, but the majority of users wont have this issue. We’ve made a lot of great fixes and changes in the next release that should address this.

Are you going to add a feature that will enable to use missing phone function by sending sms? That would be very useful because many users don’t want their phone to be connected to wifi or 3g data all the time because of battery life. Also I have data connections in roaming disabled so “missing phone” is useless when abroad. It would be great to incorporate functions that gadgettrak.com has. You have great product anyway
, best regards
Chris 22 Sep 09
That ability is actually already there!

Cant find my phone
Can you make it scream like the app said?
Chris 01 Dec 09
Hi Kerri,
Yes, as long as you have Lookout installed, you can always log in to your account at mylookout.com, and use the ‘missing device’ feature to do that. If you need any help, be sure to email support at support.at.mylookout.dot.com
